Tyre Law Shake Up

The European Union are considering regulations which could soon see increased rubber red tape forcing motorists to fit eco-friendly tyres to their cars. The draft regulations set out tough new noise limits for rubber – meaning drivers may have to switch to tyres with improved rolling resistance, which cut CO2 emissions.

While this may be good news for the environment, car news magazine Auto Express has highlighted concerns about the braking power of low-noise rubber (Issue 988). Tyre manufacturer Continental has backed these concerns warning of reduced grip and wet braking performance of some eco-friendly tyres.

Drivers are already feeling the pinch with rising fuel prices and these new rules would add to the financial burden. Under the proposals, all new cars must have stability control and tyre pressure monitors as standard which would effectively consigning basic entry-level models to the history books. It is also not yet clear whether the rubber rules only apply to new vehicles, or whether all drivers will have to buy them when their tyres need replacing.

However, it is now simple to check for noise levels where you live thanks to a new Government website which shows decibel ratings for towns and cities in England for road, rail and air noise. Visit the DEFRA website and simply enter the relevant postcode for more details.
